How do I add a location?

Adding a location is simple:

  1. Tap the "Locations" tab at the bottom of the screen
  2. Tap the "+" button in the top right corner
  3. Search for your city or allow location access to add your current location
  4. Tap on the location to add it to your saved list

You can save unlimited locations in both free and Premium versions. Premium unlocks individual weather model data.

Why are weather sources different?

Brutal Weather aggregates data from multiple weather providers (OpenWeather, WeatherAPI, and AccuWeather) to give you the most accurate picture possible. Weather forecasting is complex, and different providers use different models and algorithms.

We display a consensus average by default, but Premium users can view individual source data to compare. Slight variations between sources are normal and expected.

How do AI messages work?

Our AI features use Google's Gemini AI to generate weather commentary with personality. You can choose between two modes:

  • Roast Mode: Sarcastic, playful complaints about the weather
  • Reassure Mode: Comforting, positive spins on any forecast

The AI receives anonymized weather data (temperature, conditions, etc.) and generates appropriate commentary. Three AI modes available:

  • Gemini AI: 4 requests/day free, 8/day with Premium
  • On-Device AI: Privacy-focused, works offline (requires iOS 26+ or Android with Gemini Nano)
  • Local Messages: Unlimited pre-written messages, no AI needed
How do I cancel my premium subscription?

You can cancel your Premium subscription at any time through your device's app store:

iOS (iPhone/iPad):

  1. Open the Settings app
  2. Tap your name at the top
  3. Tap "Subscriptions"
  4. Find Brutal Weather and tap "Cancel Subscription"

Android:

  1. Open the Google Play Store
  2. Tap the menu (☰) and select "Subscriptions"
  3. Find Brutal Weather and tap "Cancel subscription"

Your Premium features will remain active until the end of your current billing period.

Why isn't my location showing correctly?

If your location isn't showing correctly, try these steps:

  1. Check that location permissions are enabled in your device settings
  2. Ensure GPS/Location services are turned on
  3. Try manually searching for your location instead
  4. Restart the app
  5. If indoors, try moving near a window or going outside briefly

Note: Weather data is based on weather station locations, so very rural areas may show data from the nearest available station.

Can I use the app without location permissions?

Yes! While we request location access for convenience, you can use Brutal Weather entirely by manually adding locations. Simply:

  1. Deny location permission when prompted
  2. Use the search function to find and add locations manually

All features except automatic current location detection will work normally.

How do notifications work?

Brutal Weather can send you weather updates and alerts:

  • Weather Updates: Regular notifications about changing conditions
  • Extreme Alerts: Warnings for severe weather in your area
  • Daily Summary: Morning brief of the day's forecast

To enable notifications, go to Settings → Notifications and toggle them on. You can customize the check interval (minimum 15 minutes) and choose which types of alerts you want to receive.

How do I enable dark mode?

Brutal Weather respects your system settings by default, but you can manually control the theme:

  1. Go to the Settings tab
  2. Toggle "Dark Mode" on or off
  3. The change applies immediately

Dark mode uses the same brutalist aesthetic with inverted colors for comfortable nighttime viewing.
